Thomas Sorber’s Masterful Freshman Campaign and Ed Cooley's Shot at a Georgetown Revival
Freshman Thomas Sorber has become the young heartbeat in Ed Cooley’s reinvented Georgetown program.
It’s no secret that Patrick Ewing’s coaching of Georgetown was a massive failure. With only one NCAA tournament appearance in his six years, and a 30-81 conference record, Ed Cooley was handed the difficult challenge of reviving this Hoyas program. Although his first year at the helm was nothing special, this year, Ed Cooley’s Georgetown is surging. The best part? They’re led by a young superstar.
Thomas Sorber has been nothing short of fantastic in his freshman campaign. He is averaging 15.1 ppg, 8.4 rpg, and shooting an ethical 55.2% from the field. Beyond this, the advanced metrics back him up too. His 60.6% true shooting, 5.66 BPR (3.43 DBPR), and 116.3 offensive rating make him an extreme threat on both sides of the ball. Sorber’s .565 EFG (Effective Field Goal %) ranks him 6th in the Big East, topping the likes of Marquette’s Kam Jones and Xavier’s Zach Freemantle.
For his Georgetown Hoyas, they obviously benefit majorly from all times that Sorber is on the court. When Sorber is on the hardwood for the Hoyas, their offense has a net rating of 25.8, which is good for 21st in the nation. With Sorber off the court, the Hoyas become a polar opposite with a -18 net rating (330th in the nation). Other statistics like offensive rebound % (36.9 on, 28.6 off), points per 100 possessions (114.4 on, 95.2 off), and opponent 2pt fg% (38.2 on, 49.3 off) back up the young freshman’s impact too.
NBADraft.Net has Sorber going 13th overall to San Antonio in this year’s upcoming draft. As a young prospect who has already shown noticeable growth in his D1 college career, the New Jersey product looks to be more than just NBA bound; he may even be a sign of good fate for a re-emerging Georgetown program.
